Actually, I had intended originally to put together a brief article on the subject, but I soon found that the matter was far too complicated for short treatment, and working on the principle that anything worth doing is worth doing in a manner in which one is most capable, I concluded that the only way to do justice to the subject was to extend it to book form, with all the necessary illustrations, line drawings and appendices. After all, the main line through Tottenham is one of the oldest lengths of railway in the country and much of historic interest-from the railway point of view -has happened in connection with it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eDespite the enormous amount of books that have been turned out on the subject of railways, there are remarkably few that can rightly be regarded as standard works of reference, fewer still are the books in full detail dealing with particularly small railways, or groups of railways. Mr. Charles E. Lee has been a pioneer in this field and his three recent books entitled The Evolution of Railways, The First Passenger Railway and Early Railways in Surrey are excellent examples of authentic and detailed railway histories. Therefore, when I discovered the amount of early history involved in the development of the railways passing through Tottenham I concluded that it might be of some small help to future-and, I modestly hope, present-railway enthusiasts and others, to group all the facts between two covers for permanent record. I was encouraged in this idea by the Borough Librarian, Mr. W. A. Bennett, who is a keen collector of data and matters concerning Tottenham and has a deep personal interest in the locality ; I am indebted to him for placing at my disposal the early files of the local press and other books and maps ; also for the loan of the lantern slide reproduced on page 49. Further encouragement to make this book as comprehensive as possible came from Mr. George Dow, Press Relations Officer, L.N.E.R., who kindly furnished me with many necessary details, documents and facilities for obtaining information at first hand ; also for checking over the text, giving much valuable advice and providing several official photographs reproduced within.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eIntroduction\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eHISTORICALLY, the railways passing through Tottenham are more than usually interesting and their story commences as far back as the year 1836 ; strategically, they are of considerable importance and their present development is the outcome of many proposals, schemes and amalgamations. It is reasonable to anticipate that in the future they may well play an important part in the full development of an electrified suburban railway system for the East Middlesex area.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eTottenham comprises an area of slightly over three thousand acres and can boast a total length of surface railways of just over eight miles ; approximately one and three-quarter miles are four tracked, the remainder being double tracked ; there are seven junctions, four goods depots, one marshalling yard and eight passenger stations, or nine if the now closed St. Ann's Road station is included.About one-quarter of Stamford Hill station is within the Borough boundary and almost exactly one mile of the Piccadilly tube passes under the Harringay side of the Borough, with Turnpike Lane station in the north-west corner.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.13em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eTottenham has developed from a small hamlet of a few scattered houses situated between the High Cross and the Hale at the time of the railway's coming, to the present closely built London suburb of some 142,000 inhabitants (1939 figures) and it is now one of the largest and most populous places in the County of Middlesex. Industrial growth has been considerable since the termination of the first world war, and there is no doubt that the very fine steam services that were operated by the late Great Eastern and Midland Railways, and their successors the London and North Eastern and London, Midland and Scottish Railways, influenced considerably the development of the district. Cheap and convenient trains were, and still are, available to the City, West End, Leyton and Barking, Stratford, the Thames Docks and Woolwich Ferry, Edmonton, Enfield, Hertford, and Wood Green.
