INTRODUCTION
The revised volume two is the first of three volumes depicting early and present day railroads in the West Kootenay of southern British Columbia. This volume specifically deals with the Slocan and Arrowhead areas north of Nelson and south of Revelstoke. Rail lines in this area were important for the mining and later the lumber industries.
Railroads in the area described herein appear on the map opposite. The only railroad not explicitly shown is the Kaslo & Slocan Railway, a shortlived railway which essentially followed the C P R line shown between Kaslo and Zincton and also ran to Sandon and Cody.
Unfortunately, all the rails in the area from Revelstoke south to South Slocan, and from Nakusp east to Kaslo and Lardeau have been abandoned and removed. The last train went by barge to Rosebery on December 19, 1988, to Nakusp on the 20th and returned to Nelson on the 21st. The last train to depart Slocan City for Nelson ran on September 14, 1993. There are still a few bridges in place, a very old boxcar CP#15756 and engine CP#6947at Sandon, CP caboose #437092 and Moyie at Kaslo.
