The final volume in 0 S Nock's definitive series, Railways of the USA is the outcome of many years of study of the American railroad system, its operation and engineering, and of many thousands of miles of travel.
Unlike the other countries and continents that the author has covered in this series, the United States has changed the character and usage of its railroads considerably over the years. The present magnificent and comprehensive network of highways, freeways and internal airline routes has meant the end of passenger trains in many areas and serious financial problems for some of the privately owned railroad companies that remain. But despite pessimistic forecasts, the American railroad is not dead - it is prospering and expanding as a freight carrier, and Americans still have a great pride in the historical traditions of their famous railroad companies. This dual picture - of US railroads as mighty freight carriers and as a part of pioneering history - forms the main theme of this book.
Beginning at Baltimore, the birthplace of the system, the author takes us on a 13,000-mile tour - all down the east coast, south to New Orleans, to Chicago, greatest rail centre of them all, across the West and the Rockies, to Los Angeles, and up to Seattle. He covers the history and development of each of the major railroad companies on the way, their present-day traffic and rolling stock, and modern technology in motive power, signalling and telecommunications, and, throughout the journey, he also gives us his own fascinating personal observations and experiences of the American scene.
