Introduction
Honours for being the first operating Caribbean railway go to the 17-mile Havana to Bejucal line in Cuba, opened in 1837, only 12 short years after the momentous 1825 opening of the steam-powered Stockton and Darlington Railway in England. While the islands of the Caribbean might seem unlikely participants in the railway boom, a brief study of the history, politics and commerce of the region reveals a situation that was ripe for their introduction.
An 1800-mile-long chain of volcanic, sedimentary or limestone land masses of varying sizes, the Caribbean islands extend from the Bahamas, just off the coast of Florida in the north to the southern-most island of Trinidad, off the coast of Venezuela. Caribbean islands come in all shapes and sizes. Cuba, the largest of the chain has a landscape composed of flat fertile plains, cool green mountains and hundreds of miles of sandy beaches, with a population of over
11 million, while the tiny, 5-square-mile Dutch island of Saba in the northern Leewards has virtually no beach and a population of about 1200 souls living in small settlements perched precariously on the sheer sides of an extinct volcanic peak. Between these two extremes is a mix of topography and climate that has supported human settlement for over 2000 years and produced everything from sugar and bananas to gold and oil.
