It would be rather difficult indeed nowadays to find many people for whom a journey by rail would still mean something out of the ordinary. We have got used to settling down in comfortable seats and take it for granted that we shall reach our destinations, travelling on our magic carpet, even if it happens to be moving along on rails, instead of flying through the air. Nevertheless, it might be just as well to remember that the advanced stage reached in modern rail travel is the result of continuous developments in this field over a period covering the lifetime of several generations; and we trust that our readers will bear with us if, by way of an introduction to modern railway travel in Switzerland, with all its many-sided facilities, we now briefly summarize progress on rails, starting with the not so far off times, when that mode of travelling was anything but an everyday occurrence.
On the memorable 25th day of September 1825, the first public railway line was opened in England, linking the towns of Stockton and Darlington. This event rather upset quite a few people-mainly those who had insisted on telling anybody who cared to listen that friction between rails and wheels would not be sufficient to enable a locomotive, expected to haul a heavily-loaded train, even to get moving; nor could many more prejudices and a great deal of opposition from various quarters, representing assorted vested interests, prevent the new means of transport from reaching out into the world and triumphantly conquer it. Nowadays, the idea propounded with considerable conviction by a good many would-be experts in those early days, that the health of rail travellers would be seriously impaired as a result of what these learned gentlemen called the fantastic speed of railways>, would do no more than cause the man in the street, who has grown used to considering space rockets as nothing very much out of the ordinary, to merely smile indulgently.
