Introduction
The story of Canada's railways is many things. It is an account of the country's early growth, for railways opened up land to agriculture, tapped our wealth of resources, shifted large segments of population and brought immigrant settlers to remote areas. It is the miracle of scattered sleepy villages mushrooming into bustling cities because of freight trains moving farm produce and manufactured goods to consumer markets. It is the fate of towns and hamlets doomed to stagnation because the tracks of steel had passed them by.
Woven into the colourful tapestry of the railways' story is the history of Canada's birth as a nation, for it was the shimmering band of steel that first welded together the far-flung regions of the young dominion.
The story of Canadian railways is an epic too of man's dreams and ambitions, of daring adventure and back-breaking labour clearing the rights of way in the wilderness, bridging lakes and canyons, blasting through solid rock and filling seemingly bottomless swamps to lay the tracks. It is the story of men who built the Iron Horses which first blazed a trail through virgin forest; of engineers who braved danger and the elements guiding their trains safely through blizzard and darkness; of men who stoked the hungry fires, braked the cars in hazardous circumstances, walked and watched the tracks on duty around the clock and gave their lives riding the rails as the pioneers of progress.
And, last but not least, the story of railways tells of spectacular change and technological achievements in man's never ending quest for faster means of transportation. From the teetering little woodburners puffing through the backwoods of Canada evolved the giant steam locomotives which crossed the continent and conquered the towering mountain ranges.
Made obsolete by even more powerful and efficient diesel engines, steam locomotives no longer rule the rails. Only a few of the faithful oldtimers are still preserved - a part of our heritage and proud reminders of a glorious past - but the story of railways goes on as they serve the ever growing needs of a modern nation.
