PREFACE
BRITAIN'S heritage, if viewed in its entirety, would be an exceedingly difficult thing to define : a synthesis, some might say, of many finite and abstract things-the beauty of the cathedrals, a great seafaring tradition, the charm of the countryside, the love of sport-to mention just a few. In this mosaic of the imagination the great industry of transportation by mil takes a prominent place. In Great Britain the railway industry is in many ways symbolic of our national heritage, with a history rich in great men and great deeds, and a legacy from the pioneers of a hundred years ago of bold engineering and robust pleasing architecture amply adequate to carry the incomparably heavier traffic of to-day.
The literature of British railways is already large, and to it I have freely referred, though most books so far published deal with specialised aspects of their history, engineering, and problems of operation. No industry can have enjoyed the attention of a more devoted band of amateur enthusiasts, and a good deal of the best existing literature is due to the careful researches of men not professionally connected with the railways. In writing this book, however, I have had in mind a wider circle of readers, and though specialists may feel that I have treated too lightly some of the things to which their own spare time energies are devoted-train timing for example-I hope that they too may derive some pleasure from these pages.
This book is the outcome of some 30 years of travel, study and observation. Most of it, however, was written at a time when railway travel savoured more of purgatory than pleasure ; but the untoward travelling conditions of wartime were largely pushed into the background when I came to turn up a host of old notes and photographs, each bringing vivid memories of interesting journeys in happier days. Even so, I had not progressed far before I realised that the writing of this book was going to be a greater pleasure than I had ever imagined. Mr. Harry Batsford is an enthusiast of the first water, and since our earliest meeting I have enjoyed a delightful correspondence with him on many aspects of railway history, architecture, locomotive design, and even topiary ! The book owes much to the diversity of his own interests.
