This was a most interesting and exciting period in the development of railways all over the world.
PREFACE
In filling in the gap between the period covered by two earlier volumes in this series, The Dawn of World Railways 1800-1850, and Railways at the Turn of the Century 1895-1905-the years 1851-1895-the artists and I have still been working on much pioneer ground. For the period covers the beginnings of railways in many overseas countries, including India, New Zealand, Japan and parts of Canada. Fortunately however the correspondence that has resulted from the earlier volumes has made many contacts for us in hitherto 'closed' areas, and with information now to hand we have been able to fill in a few of the more obvious gaps existing in our earlier books. This is particularly the case with Japan, through the kindness of Messrs. Y. Kawakami and H. Uematsu.
