THE RAILWAYS OF IRELAND IN FOUR PARTS
This is the first part of what I hope will be a mini series covering all the Railways of Ireland, together with their associated steamship services.
The first question to be addressed is how to divide the subject into four quarters of roughly equal size. An obvious thought was to use the four ancient provinces of Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connacht but they have no significance in terms of railway development. Better, perhaps, to use the Pre - Grouping Companies as the basis. This, broadly, is what I have done but there remain some anomalies. The principal subjects in the Four Parts are planned to be:
Part One: The North West. Great Northern; Sligo, Leitrim & Northern Counties; County Donegal; Londonderry & Lough Swilly; Cavan & Leitrim; Clogher Valley; Castlederg & Victoria Bridge.
Part Two: The North East. Belfast & Northern Counties; Belfast & County Down; Dundalk, Newry & Greenore; Bessbrook & Newry; Belfast City Tramways; Ballycastle; Giants Causeway; Cross Channel Steamers; Northern Ireland Railways; Enterprise Express.
Part Three: Dublin and the South East. Dublin & South Eastern, Dublin to Waterford; Fishguard & Rosslare; Waterford & Tramore; Dublin United Tramways; Darts Arrows and Luas; Irish Sea Shipping.
Part Four: The South and West. Great Southern & Western; Midland Great Western; Cork, Bandon & South Coast;Cork local lines; Tralee & Dingle; West Clare; Listowel & Ballybunion; Great Southern; larnrod Eireann.
