The centres described in this book are all open to the public at prescribed times, and none of them requires special permission for a visit. A few are free, most cost money, but it must be remembered that steam train rides are expensive to arrange, even allowing for dedicated work by volunteers. Fares charged should not be measured on a mileage basis, but for the interest and enjoyment the journey affords. Advance bookings are not required.
In most cases the centres provide good car parking, which is usually free. Children are welcomed, and should be brought to sample this form of traction. It will help to impress upon them the importance of the steam engine as the major breakthrough in the development of transport and its immense contribution to Britain's greatness, following her lead at the time of the Industrial Revolution.
Refreshment rooms are part and parcel of most preserved lines and steam centres. Prices are kept to a modest level, the small profit being put to excellent use on the railway. I do not know of any cafe or refreshment room on a preserved railway staffed other than by willing volunteers.
The shops mentioned in the text are well stocked with railway books, guides to the particular line, postcards, souvenir items such as cups and mugs with locomotive designs on them, jigsaw puzzles of trains, tea towels, pens, paintings, pennants, ashtrays, key rings, and often railway models. They are all worthy of support, even a modest purchase, such as a pair of balloons decorated with steam engines, contributing something to the high cost of running a preserved railway.
By purchasing a ticket to ride and using the facilities, the reader will avoid that curious accusation of being a `Gricer'. This is a recent term, widely used in English speaking lands, and its exact meaning is not clear, but one is a `Gricer' who drives to a preserved steam line, chases trains with a car, photographs them, and spends nothing on the railway.
