THE railway in its crudest and most elementary form is over two hundred years old ; the steam locomotive engine about a century and a quarter ; but for practical purposes railway history is comprised within the last hundred years. Indeed, outside England hardly a railway of any kind existed a century since. To-day there are about 750,000 miles of railway in the world, while kingdoms or states which have less than 1,000 miles are either very small or are only partially opened up for trade and industry. Instead of a score or so of clanking, slow-moving, erratic steam locomotives, used only for hauling a few small coal or stone wagons, there are now over 200,000 engines, mostly of modern dimensions and types, engaged in hauling either passenger coaches or goods and coal wagons, and these wagons and coaches together number over 6,000,000.
At first people did not take to the idea of " travel by machinery." We may laugh at the Chinaman who, barely fifty years ago, wrecked the first railway in the then Celestial Empire, and forced the first engine to be buried to save it from being destroyed as a " fire-devil." But a hundred years ago, even in Great Britain and the United States, many people regarded the steam locomotive as a device of the Devil). and the railway almost as if it provided a short route to the lower regions.
