THE RAILWAY STATION has long served a vital role in the lives of citizens. Through the station, travel begins and ends. Stations have served as the gateway to the world's great cities and the point of contact for some of the world's most remote towns. From the railway's beginnings, people recognized the station as having civic importance greater than ordinary structures, and railway stations have therefore been built in a variety of elaborate architectural styles. In the nineteenth century, one of the best architectural commissions available was a big-city station. The inherent nature of the station is unlike that of other buildings: as a gateway, people arrive at the station to leave it.
