Railways were used spasmodically for supply and troop movement in the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71; entirely new railway facilities were built for Lord Kitchener's Sudan campaign in 1882.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv style=\"text-align:left\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-family:Calibri;font-size:1.0em;color:#000000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;\"\u003eThe first real use of railways for war purposes came in the South African campaigns with patrolling armored trains protecting communications and with heavy artillery mounted on rails-both features that were later utilised much more fully. The usefulness of railways in war perhaps reached its climax in World War I when hundreds of miles of narrow-gauge track reached right up to the front lines and some highly peculiar vehicles ran thereon; World War II also saw an extensive usage of rail transport for various purposes. The present volume is the outcome of this idea and he has collaborated with Keith Davies as author.
