Railways and warfare have associations dating back to the Crimea Campaign of 1854-56, when a civilian contractor inaugurated the first supply railway. Railways were used spasmodically for supply and troop movement in the American Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71; entirely new railway facilities were built for Lord Kitchener's Sudan campaign in 1882.
The first real use of railways for war purposes came in the South African campaigns with patrolling armored trains protecting communications and with heavy artillery mounted on rails-both features that were later utilised much more fully. The usefulness of railways in war perhaps reached its climax in World War I when hundreds of miles of narrow-gauge track reached right up to the front lines and some highly peculiar vehicles ran thereon; World War II also saw an extensive usage of rail transport for various purposes. Since then their involvement has declined.
A number of successful books have appeared in the Macmillan Color Series on Railways of the World and also on Mechanised Warfare. Indeed it was Denis Bishop's illustrations of military transport of the two World Wars that led him to suggest volumes dealing specifically with military vehicles on rail. The present volume is the outcome of this idea and he has collaborated with Keith Davies as author. Mr. Davies has written many previous books on railway subjects, including the well-known Light Railways of World War I.
This volume covers the period up to 1918 and concentrates on the more unusual aspects-the mortars on rails of the American Civil War, the Boer War Armored Trains, and the plethora of peculiar devices used on the light narrow-gauge lines of World War I.
