WHEN, from May 1983, the long-standing Harwich Parkeston Ouay-Manchester Piccadilly boat train was extended to run to and from Glasgow and Edinburgh. mild interest was expressed in the way that the 'European', as it had been dubbed, would establish a link between the Continent, Harwich and Scotland. In fact, Rai!freight, BR's sector name for its freight activities, had beaten the passenger people to it, and as far as Harwich and Parkeston are concerned, the list of inter-Regional Speedlink and Freightliner trains makes the 'European' look positively tame. The first air-braked wagonload inter-Regional service in East Anglia started in 1973, between Parkeston and Edinburgh, which by 1976 had become the 14.55 to Glasgow Sighthill. In addition, there was an Anglo-Scottish Freightliner train, the 19.45 Parkeston Container Terminal to Coatbridge Containerbase. Ten years after the start of that pioneer service, there are Speedlink trains from Parkeston to Paisley. Mossend, Warrington. Tees, Bescot. Widnes and Oxford, with return workings to Parkeston and Whitemoor. all but one conveying Continental traffic brought by the Zeebrugge-Harwich Town train ferry.
Freight traffic using the train ferry increased during the late 1970s/early 1980s hut movement handling costs had moved out of line with receipts, so that drastic action was taken by BR's management in 1982 to gel things hack on the straight and narrow. That 'year of action' was also marked by the disastrous labour disputes between BR and the unions which naturally lost traffic to road, although most was recovered surprisingly soon.
