THE DESTRUCTION of Philip Hardwick's Doric portico and of his son's Great Hall at Euston have come to be regarded as a symbolic act of the times. The stones from the Doric portico are supposed to have been numbered by the demolition contractors in case they might be reused. Incidentally, what happened to the stones - are they perhaps tipped down some inaccessible quarry, or forming the foundations of a 20-storey office block?
Rightly or wrongly, the demise of the old Euston station, the day of the Beeching Plan, and the finale of the steam worked British Railways - not to speak of other social and political changes of the time such as the Profumo scandal now appear to be something of a watershed.
