"I SAY, Betty," said Jack, "this is a fine book. Just see all the big engines and cars."
"It is splendid," Betty replied, "and how real they look. I believe that big express engine on this page is the very one that pulled our train when we went to Grandma's last summer."
"Well, that scene of the river certainly looks like where the river runs through Grandma's town," said Jack, "and I do believe that I went swimming right behind that clump of trees."
" Jack, do you know what I think ? " burst in Betty.
"No, what ? You're always thinking something or other," replied Jack.
" Now, Jack, that's mean," she answered, "but, really, I was thinking how brave a man must be to run an engine."
" He is," said Jack. " Engineers are true as steel. Father says lots of them stick to their post through thick and thin. Guess I'll be one when I'm a man, Betty."
"You!" laughed Betty, "why, you wouldn't go down in the cellar to get your hammer, because it was dark."
"Say, Bet," Jack interrupted, "this is a splendid train. Let's get to work and cut it out."
"Oh, yes, anything to change the subject, brave engineer," teased Betty.
Jack cut out the cars, No. 1, while Betty made ready the paste.
"We will glue the cars first, Betty," said Jack, "on the nearest track, as far to the left as possible, so that the engine, No. 2, will back right up to the cars, and the smoke, A, fit the top of the first car at B."
When this was done, Jack put the signal up on the bank in the foreground.
"Hurrah ! " he cried, "there she flies-the Fast Express ! "
"Oh," cried Betty, "let me get out of the way !"
