The advent of the railways in the nineteenth century symbolized for the Victorians a new age of progress, power, and civilization. Since then the blessings of industrialization have not been unmixed, but the importance of the railways has always been acknowledged. This book examines the role of the railway station in society throughout the world, and the microcosm it reveals is of a complexity and fascination undreamt of by our forebears.
Station architecture has been studied and admired for many years and this book charts the changing styles in the construction and decoration of the station, from the sombre grandeur of St Pancras to the humbler delights of country stations in the American Mid-West. For the people who work there and the travellers who pass through, the facilities offered by the station are as important as the building itself: the booking-office, the buffet, the bookstall, the waiting-rooms have become as familiar as the trains. In paintings and poetry stations have been depicted as places of tearful departure or joyful reunion, and in films such as Brief Encounter the station assumes a starring role. Stations have a part to play in politics and in the economy, especially in wartime, and all over the world governments have recognized their strategic significance.
