DURING THE LIFETIME Of two men, England was transformed from a rural land where speed of communications had been determined by the horse, to an industrial complex linked by a network of rails which spanned rivers, burrowed beneath mountains, brought London and Edinburgh within a day's journey of each other. The two men responsible were George Stephenson and his son Robert.
George Stephenson, born in 1781, lacked formal education. Yet through his astonishing intuitive grasp of mechanical principles he harnessed for practical use James Watt's discovery of steam power. Today, the railroads that straddle the continents of the earth and the locomotives that thunder along them are in a sense his legacies.
Although it was his famous Rocket that finally proved to a skeptical world that steam locomotion was the transport of the future, George Stephenson might never have won renown as creator of the Railway Revolution had it not been for his son Robert. The contrast between father and son is one of the most fascinating aspects of this book. Their characters were complementary. Reticent where his father was assertive, Robert Stephenson was not accorded his due by his contemporaries or by posterity. George Stephenson was working on uncharted territory, and his instinctive mechanical flair sometimes led him into grievous blunders. He survived these blunders largely because of his educated son's unflagging attention to detail, persuasive manner, and skill in overcoming the ignorant opposition of committees of the Reformed Parliament and of vested interests.
