INVENTORY OF RAILWAY MOTIVE POWER OWNERSHIP As of January 1, 1968
The RAILWAY AGE Inventory of Diesel Motive Power and Installations of New Diesel Locomotives has been enlarged this year to include the Inventory of Electric Locomotives; Electric M-U (multiple unit) Cars; M-U Trailer Cars and Diesel Rail Motor Cars.
On January 1, 1968, according to this survey there were 33,646 Diesel Locomotives (including Gas Turbine Locomotives) in service in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Central America. These Units develope 56,670,318 horsepower.
In addition, there were 415 Electric Locomotives developing 1,332,599 horsepower in service in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Also, there were 1,835 Electric M-U Cars developing 891,289 horsepower, and 555 M-U Trailer cars in service in the United States, Canada & Mexico.
And there were 308 Diesel Rail Motor Cars developing 160,750 horsepower in service in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
