INTRODUCTION
In my preceding book, Railway Milk Cars, Volume 3, DL&W Milk Cars Part 1, we examined the Lackawanna's roster of milk cars, both in appearance and by total number of cars rostered by year. We looked at the milk coming off the Syracuse and Utica Branches down to Binghamton, and the forwarding of that milk east to New Jersey. Consists from different years of Trains 44 and 47 were examined several ways. A listing of creameries that were known to have existed on the Lackawanna was printed. A nice variety of photos depicting the milk operations in the above-mentioned area was portrayed. Having a copy of Volume 3, DL&W Part 1, will be very helpful when reading this volume.
In Volume 4, DL&W Milk Cars Part 2, I have concentrated on just the milk operations in New Jersey. As previously stated, I do not intend this book to be an all encompassing historical document delving into the individual operations of each creamery known to have existed. As with Volume 3, this book will be augmented towards those interested in the late 1940s, 1950s, and into the early 1960s. Sussex Branch operations lasting into the 1960s will be the main interest; however, I will touch briefly on several other operations known to have existed. Some photos I could not get into Volume 3 will be included. Although a greater number of photos seem to exist for the New Jersey operations, we will not be blessed with the train consists and dispatcher sheets that were so valuable in examining the milk coming off the S&U Branches. We will look at the Lackawanna's use of old milk cars in maintenance of way service and conclude with a chart of milk revenue by year. All locations are in New Jersey unless otherwise specified.
