THIS book, passing through the fifth edition, has now been in circulation for over 20 years, and by its continued sale would appear to have met an appreciative demand, especially abroad and on the part of the younger members of the railway service at home. In the Preface to the Third Edition in 1898 I called attention to the desirability of Railway Technical Examinations. I hear of some lectures having been given in Manchester and London on Railway Work, which is a move in the right direction. It, however, appears to me that such lectures could be better given by practical railway men, rather than by professional teachers " grubbing up " railway technical work and imparting it theoretically.
Railway officers are now retiring from the service as younger men than formerly, and among the retired officers (now constituting the Retired Railway Officers' Society, of which I have the privilege to be Honorary Secretary and originator) there is plenty of practical material which could be utilised both to lecture and teach railway technical work in respect to the Goods, Passenger, Signal, and, if required, Engineering Departments.
The Great Western Railway Company now seem to hold a premier position as pioneers in introducing Voluntary Technical Examinations for their staff. In January, 1910, Mr. T. H. Rendell, their Chief Goods Manager, presided over a meeting at Paddington for the presentation of certificates gained by students attending the classes and lectures during the previous winter. The Signalling Classes are held at Paddington, Reading, and Swindon, and the Station Accounts Classes at Paddington.
