Italy may fairly claim to possess one of the most attractive railway systems in Europe and this volume, the eighth in the popular Railway Holiday series, describes the most interesting features of the Italian railway scene as viewed in the course of a fortnight's holiday.
The journey starts at industrial Milan in the north, with its complex of suburban railways, including one of the world's newest Underground lines. Next, the ports of Savona and Genoa are visited and the surviving three-phase electric railways examined before continuing south to Rome and Naples. The astonishing gradients of the Appennine lines are described, together with their heavy traffic, and after a look at the far south of Italy the return journey is made up the east coast to the great junctions of Bologna and Verona, with a final exciting journey up to the Brenner.
Steam locomotives, of which Italy had 1,859 at the end of 1965, have a chapter to themselves, as well as many incidental references. Electric locomotives, the many types of railcar and the rolling-stock are all covered, as well as a fine variety of diesel locomotives, including the hydrostatic-type peculiar to Italy. The evolution of the older British-type signalling practices into the modern colour lights is explained, and a full account is given of Italian traffic-working methods, centred on one man at each station. Italy's numerous branch lines are well represented, stations world-renowned for their architectural style are explored and, throughout, the author provides the historical background against which a clear picture of the evolving railway system emerges.
A particularly valuable feature of the book is the appendices which set out the numbers and technical details of all types of existing motive power of the Italian State Railways, as well as the motive power and mileage of all private railways in Italy.
