DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Between the Norman Cathedral of Peterborough and the Georgian pump rooms of Bath, and the fringes of the Greater London and West Midlands conurbations lies an amorphous area of verdant countryside and quiet market towns with a surprisingly full and varied railway history. Such is the complex area covered by this volume in the Railway History in Pictures series. Yet it goes beyond this function for it acts as an illustrative supplement to Forgotten Railways: Chilterns & Cotswolds, complementary to it, yet capable of standing on its own.
Many different aspects of the railway scene are portrayed to compare and contrast the different parts of the area and the railway companies that served it. The periods covered in the illustrations are as broad as railways themselves, from contemporary illustrations of the London & Birmingham of the 1830s to today's High Speed Train era. The accompanying narrative gives thumbnail sketches for each illustration and introduces each section. Maps and diagrams illustrate the complex railway geography of the area, which to a great extent has been fashioned within the stringent limits imposed by topographical features, in particular the natural gaps through the parallel ranges of hills, the Chilterns and Cotswolds, and the great river valleys between.
