On 7th November, 1963, Mr. C. C. Singleton, Honorary Research Officer and Past President of the Australian Railway Historical Society, joint author of "Railways of Australia," and a leading authority on the history of Australian, and particularly New South Wales, Railways, addressed the Illawarra Historical Society on the history of the Illawarra Line. Subsequently, at the Society's request, he prepared this written account, revised and expanded from an article which appeared in the Australian Railway Historical Society Bulletin for January, 1946. In its preparation he received valuable assistance, which he gratefully acknowledged from his great friend Mr. G. H. Eardley.
The Society is indebted to the late C. C. Singleton for providing his manuscript and his map of the Deviations of the Illawarra Line. Thanks are also due to Mr. J. L. Wood who kindly drew the map of The Illawarra Railway.
No details are included relating to the Port Kembla Branch or the Unanderra-Moss Vale cross-country line, as the author felt that these subjects would merit a separate treatment beyond the scope of this publication.
Additional notes (identified by the initials J.L.N.S.) and the appendix "Colliery Railways in 1887" have been contributed by Mr. J. L. N. Southern, B.Met.E. (Melb.), a member of both the A.R.H.S. and our own Society.
