The railway's history goes back to Greece and Babylon, though it had to wait for mechanical propulsion, very early in the nineteenth century, to become a real part of our world. Even as late as the 1830's, when one of the first important railways (England's Great Western) was being built, a powerful pressure group pushed the claims of a rival, an arterial road with steam carriages. Nevertheless the railway, like others, was built, and worked ; and then for nearly a century this form of transport enjoyed a monopoly on land. Only in our time has that monopoly gone ; yet still the heavy confining track-disciplined transport-is incomparable for carrying bulk freight and massed passengers by land. It works in all seasons and all weathers.
This is the first paperback to survey the whole subject pictorially, from early times to the present day. There are 140 photographs of trains, tracks, railway incidents and curiosities in different parts of the world, together with a general informative text. Probably only Hamilton Ellis could have packed so much into one small book, and made it not only interesting but scholarly. At one time a railwayman himself, and the author of many well-known books written for laymen and for specialists, he is recognised internationally as a leading authority on the subject.
