This booklet is a record of some of the names and heralds that have appeared on railway rolling stock over the years. Almost as soon as railway rolling stock was invented it was discovered that two tasks could be performed. The first, of course, was to transport people and goods about the country. The second was to advertise the railroad, the lands it travelled and the goods it carried. In the time before electronic communications and jet carriers, the sight of "Pacific Great Eastern" on a passing train brought visions of exotic and distant lands. Several generations of young people learned the nation's geography by observing these cars and dreaming of one day visiting the distant places. Even the railroads themselves indulged in a bit of dreaming as many that went no further than around the corner included the distant Pacific in their names. In recent times, competition from other modes of transport and the resulting railroad mergers have reduced the variety of names seen on passing trains. One of the objectives of this book is to document a bit of this disappearing history.
Collected here are some 800 illustrations of North American equipment used during the period 1880 to 2001. Each of the diagrams illustrates the appearance of an item of rolling stock. The style and placement of the lettering and, where possible, the details of the car construction and the dates the styles used appeared in common service. As cars often remained unchanged for many years, these dates indicate an era rather than an exact time. Some diagrams show only a single date. This is the date the cars first appeared in this style and they will have been in common service for perhaps five or 10 years after that date. For many of the illustrations, the number series used for the cars is also indicated. most equipment was renumbered at least once during its life, and thus different numbers may have been used in eras outside the range indicated on the diagram.
Each diagram has been researched using equipment registers and photographs of actual cars in service. There was at least one car of the type shown. Whether the style was common, however, depends on the location of the observer and the perspective of history. In many instances, the research has uncovered a conflict between "official" railroad drawings and photographs of cars. Heralds used in printed advertising timetables and brochures also often differ from heralds actually used on the rolling stock.
