ABOUT THE BOOK This biography of the man who made the first successful locomotive is as fascinating as the story of Robert Fulton, who made the first really practical steamboat.
George Stevenson's childhood in England is delightfully and sympathetically told; the story of the opening of the first railroad is dramatic. Stevenson was not only the inventor of the Rocket, he invented a safety lamp for miners, and made many useful improvements in early railroading.
Eric Simon, who is an expert in eighteenth-century background, has given the book a delightful eighteenth-century setting. He spent hours studying the Stevenson engines in order to get every detail correct; his pictures are both accurate and decorative.
