Introduction
It is surprising that railway electrification has been the exception rather than the rule in New Zealand. Notwithstanding the recent power shortages, the country has for many years had an abundance of cheap power from its hydro-electric generating stations, and yet at present only two per cent of the New Zealand Railways' system is electrified.
New Zealand Railways today largely relies on diesel-electric locomotives for main line work  a convenient form of motive power in as much as each locomotive carries its own generating plant and thus does not require overhead wires and current collection equipment, while retaining the smoothness of operation of the straight electric type of machine. But the diesel-electric is not without its disadvantages, including high running and maintenance costs, and today, much higher fuel prices coupled with some uncertainty of continuity of supply.
As early as 1894 the progressive Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company, which operated the west coast route between Wellington and Palmerston North until taken over by the Government in 1908, considered electrifying its line. Nothing came of this proposal, which was made at a time when main-line electrification world-wide was largely still at the experimental stage.
