Railway Disasters of the World By Peter Semmens Principal passenger train accidents of the 20th century Dust Jacket 1994  264 Pages
The rarity of railway disasters is such that wherever they occur in the world they inevitably make the news headlines, even if the death-toll may be no more than a typical, local road accident. The railway carriage is, in fact, one of the safest places to travel, but from time to time catastrophes still happen, despite the continual study and implementation of safety procedures and technology. Equipment breakdown, severe weather conditions and human error can all lead to disaster, but it is often a combination of such factors that has catastrophic consequences.
Here, for the first time, the subject of railway accidents is looked at from a global perspective. This book forms a comprehensive study of such incidents during the 20th century that have resulted in the loss of 20 or more lives. Details of when and where accidents have occurred, the railway company concerned, the likely causes, the number of casualties and any other points of interest, are all included. Whilst some have occurred in extremely remote locations, making the recovery of casualties and wreckage difficult, others have taken place in city centres, with an entirely different set of circumstances hampering the work of the emergency services.
The attitude of the public and the media to such events is examined, together with the way in which the pioneering work of the Railway Inspectorate in Great Britain has enabled the causes of disasters to be pinpointed and steps taken to prevent their recurrence. The particular hazards of steam locomotive boiler explosions are also described, along with some of the deliberate wreckings of railways that have taken place during wars and revolutions.
Peter Semmens has travelled widely by rail throughout the world, and is well known for his contributions to the railway press for more than 40 years. For the past 13 years he has been the author of the Railway Magazine's long-running 'Practice & Performance' column. Since retiring from the post of Assistant Keeper at the National Railway Museum he has become increasingly involved in writing on railways, both historical and modern, and is now Chief Correspondent of Railway Magazine.
