Railway carriages are a familiar part of everyday travel by train, but in the annals of railway literature they have been among the most neglected aspects. Yet they are not without interest; indeed there was as much if not more variety in carriage types as locomotives, and the development of railway carriages and equipment forms part of social history.
In this second fully revised edition of Railway Carriage Album G. M. Kichenside, formerly Editor of the popular monthly journal Railway World and an authority on coaching stock, has assembled over 400 photographs of railway carriages from the 1870s until the present day, illustrating ordinary and specialised coaches and the many carriage features that today are taken for granted in rail travel. Of particular interest are the colour plates of coaches illustrating liveries past and present.
