THE PUBLICATION of a sequel to `Searching for Railway Telegraph Insulators' is in part symptomatic of the increase in interest for the subject in just four years since 1982 but it is also occasioned by the number of new types of insulator that have come to my notice since then.
The more authoritative title of volume two reflects this, as well as a slight change of emphasis in the approach to this book. It is, intentionally, more of a descriptive catalogue and less of an account of my London childhood in the early years of this century, in which insulators played a very prominent part.
Despite the competition that the publishers organised to coincide with the launch of my first book I know that, as a list of manufactured types, both volumes taken together will necessarily be incomplete. But I am not just interested in typology. Information about manufacturers and the use that was made of railway telegraph insulators is most welcome, and should also be addressed to the Signal Box Press. The subject is still new enough for us all to make important discoveries.
