"Skookum, " to the Chinook Indians of British Columbia, means excellent, firstrate-and CP Rail aims at being a skookum railroad. For nearly a decade it has pursued this goal by instilling a keen sense of marketing in all of its executives, and the effort is paying off. Rate of return on capital was up to 7.4% last year from 4.7% five years ago; net income after taxes was $63.5 million, up 80% from 1973 net on a 10.7% increase in freight revenue ton miles. And from 1973 to 1978, its transportation ratio dropped from 36 to 34.7-one of the best on the continent. Here's how they did it.
