22 Railroading for Profit, Part IV:
Getting control of operations
Electronic systems for controlling, coordinating, and monitoring train and car movements are helping railroads improve their performance-but not enough. The key to further improvement may be motivation of employees to make the most and best possible use of the tools available.
34 Industrial development: Taking advantage of trends
Plant locations on railroads are down in number but up in capital investment and potential for rail revenue. Government obstacles increasingly hamper site developers, but Southern Pacific is meeting that problem head on.
41 Pullman builds its millionth freight car
To mark the milestone, Pullman Standard has produced a special 50-foot boxcar that, unlike its 999,999 predecessors, may never work on the railroad at all but may end up, instead, in a museum.
46 L&D: The little payouts that add up
Of the $85 million that railroads paid out in loss-and-damage claims on motor vehicle traffic last year, over 76% went for damages with not readily identifiable causes. Finding-and eliminating-those causes could save a lot of money and improve rail's image with car shippers.
52 M-K's Sulzer: A 4-cycle fuel saver?
In a fuel consumption-rate test, Morrison-Knudsen pitted its four-cycle, six-cylinder, Sulzer diesel engine against a two-cycle, 16-cvclinder diesel-both in 1,500-hp locomotives. On the AAR duty cycle, the Sulzer's hourly consumption rate was lower by 10.4%.
56 Traffic Poll: Car data for shippers
Railroads' car location and tracing capabilities have continued to improve over the past two years, shippers say, but many suggest further improvements.
