Short and Significant
Possible Southern purchase of the FEC ... was in the rumor mill last week. Southern President D. W. Brosnan said he hadn't heard the Florida line was for sale-but Southern would be interested if FEC went on the block.
64 piggyback carloadings ... are off to a healthy start. TOFC loadings totaled 12,294 cars in the week ended Jan. 4-a 20.5% increase over loadings for the corresponding week last year.
An electronic weighing scale ... will be installed by the Nickel Plate at its Brewster, Ohio, yard as part of a $1-million project designed to increase the yard's capacity by 520 cars, or 25%.
The op unions are appealing ... the court ruling which upheld the arbitration award on the fireman-off and crew-consist issues in the rules case (RA, Jan. 6/13, p. 7).
'Kennedy' transport bills ... and proposed compromise embodied in "print" distributed by the House Commerce Committee will come before that committee again in executive sessions beginning Jan. 28.
Effective date of ICC order approving merger... of Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line was postponed from Jan. 12 until the Commission passes on reconsideration pleas filed by intervening railroads and labor unions.
