North Queensland is rich in history, and its residents are justifiably proud of their interesting heritage. The area developed from the early 1870s into one of the major mining areas in Australia in the years leading up to the First World War, but since then, the mining activity has declined and its place taken by primary industry, mainly cattle, tobacco and sugar cane. Cairns, basking in its tropical splendour, and after somewhat doubtful beginnings, has expanded to become one of the major cities of the North.
As in other areas, the railway played an important part in the development of the surrounding country, and the "iron horse" quickly established itself as the most reliable means of transport in the golden years prior to the introduction of the internal combustion engine and the conquest of the air. Today, the railway is considered by many people to be outmoded, however in Queensland, and especially in the North, it still has an important role to play.
The Cairns Railway has grown with this development as one of Australia's northernmost rail outposts, and its Range Railway has quickly established itself into one of Queensland's major tourist attractions. This then, is the story of the Cairns Railway, and is dedicated to those hardy pioneering men and women who, a century ago, made a dream into a reality.
