INTRODUCTION
The Grand Canyon Railway cannot be considered a simple spur line from Williams to the Grand Canyon because a variety of events have combined to make it what it is today. This milepost guide will give the reader some insight into its history and surroundings along with a description of the points of interest to be seen along the right-of-way keyed to the railroad mileposts.
Chapter 3, the guide itself, is printed in larger than usual type so it can be easily read while the train is in motion. Each description will tell the reader about the natural or human history pertinent to that location. Read ahead and watch for anything that is of interest.
Once on the train the reader embarks on a journey which began over four billion years ago and may never end. The tracks are only sixty-four miles in length but the history of the land, nature and people covers much more. Geologic forces and erosion have shaped the land until it is what we see today but what seems so permanent will change as time passes. The geologic journey begins with the oldest formations in the bottom of the Grand Canyon and ends at Williams with the most recent activity. Northern Arizona is famous for its marvelous landscapes and the guide is keyed to several locations which highlight the best sights. Nature gives the rider a spectacular display of landforms, flora and fauna which is virtually impossible to duplicate. The trip begins in magnificent forests, crosses open vistas and ends at the south rim of one of Mother Earth's most spectacular natural formations.
The guide is not restricted to what is to be seen along the right-of-way. One section orients the reader to the Colorado Plateau and Grand Canyon region, a relatively small area which contains the most concentrated collection of National Parks and Monuments within the United States. Within these preserves lie some of the world's most spectacular scenery. People, plants and animals of the area are also discussed in separate segments. Lastly the history of the rebuilding of today's Grand Canyon Railway with detailed descriptions of the company's motive power and rolling stock adds to the narrative.
