DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Volume 3 of Rails Remembered is a continuation of the previous volumes covering the author's recollections of railroading. In this one he is an active participant - although admittedly a novice - as an employee of the Norfolk & Western Railway.
During the time period of this volume, most major U. S. railroads were dieselizing at a rapid pace, and several had already reached that goal. Not so, of course, on the Norfolk & Western, the foremost champion of the cause of steam motive power. In fact, the N&W was still completely committed to steam - and was even adding to its extensive fleet of "modern coal-burning steam locomotives" by building new ones in its Roanoke Shops.
Not intended to be a formal treatise, Volume 3 is a first-person account of the author's day-to-day experiences as a special apprentice in the N&W's Mechanical Department from 1950 through March 1953. Beginning at the busy Shaffers Crossing engine terminal and continuing through the various departments of the company's vast Roanoke Shops, he describes the work in which he participated - and some of the people involved, part of a large group of dedicated and loyal employees of all ranks. New locomotives constructed during that time included the magnificent streamlined Class J's, the workhorse Y-6b's, and the S-la Switchers. Road tests of both Class A and Y-6b locomotives with the N&W Dynamometer Car are described.
This volume also covers some of the more obscure but picturesque portions of the N&W system, such as the Abingdon and the North Carolina Branches, and includes a few flashbacks into the company's earlier history. It also provides glimpses of the operations of some of N&W's neighbors, including the Chesapeake & Ohio, the Southern, and the Virginian Railways.
Many of the black-and-white photographs are from the author's collection. Others are from the collection of James M. Jarvis, a British railroader who visited the N&W in 1951; from Frank E. Ardrey, Jr.; and from the Norfolk and Western Railway Archival Collection, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Libraries.
