Small railroads and short lines, many now long gone . . . But railroads instrumental in the history of America's largest state.
According to the author, "Written records giving the name of Alaska's first railroad have been lost, but a photo taken on May 14, 1894, showing a little 0-4-0 narrow gauge locomotive pushing a flatcar with passengers exists."
The name of this railroad is not important, but Alaskans, with their sense of humor, may have named it Moose Gooser, or some such title given because of an incident rather than a destination.
On the other hand, it may have been the Seward City and Berners Bay . . . Who knows? It was only three and one half miles long, but it was vital: it carried miners to the gold and their gold to the banks, eventually.
Howard Clifford presents here the most complete story in pictures and text that has been told to date of the railroads of the frozen North. The White Pass and Yukon, The Alaska Railroad, The Copper River and Northwestern, The Seward Peninsula. Klondike Mines Railway, Atlin Southern and the Yakutat and Southern, to name just a few. He lists equipment rosters, and gives lively sketches of the early builders and the monumental problems that confronted them.
In addition. Mr. Clifford summarizes the various proposals for railroads in the far north; many that never got much further than a man's dream. some that are still on the drawing board for the future.
