In the mid-nineteenth century the discovery of gold on the western slope of the Sierras generated a spectacular population boom and, for a few, the orgiastic excitement of sudden wealth. Many a promising gold strike soon played out, however, and it was left to the lumber barons who followed the Forty-Niners to set the region's economy on a less tumultuous course and build more durable fortunes.
Logging depended on steam power and rail transport, and as the lumberjacks advanced, they were followed by ever-lengthening tentacles of both standard and narrow-gauge trackage. This is the story of the Mother Lode's more picturesque railroads and of the men who built and operated them. It's a saga of coloful characters, financial daring, ingenious construction and other heroic achievement, as well as hair-raising wrecks and catastrophic natural disasters.
It's a story of tiny trains plying the rails from commercial centers into the forests to the very sites where warning shouts of, "Timmmberrr!" rang out over the shreik of locomotive whistles and squeal of flanged wheels against spidery steel rails.
Following the turn of the century, new. sounds were added to the forest symphony-the thunder of dynamite charges and the clatter of pneumatic drills, mixed with the thump of pile drivers and the chuff of locomotive exhaust as the railroad paced the construction of San Francisco's vital Hetch Hetchy water supply system..
