INTRODUCTION
Boston is the capital of Massachusetts and the largest city in New England. Founded during 1630 as the main settlement of the Massachusetts Bay Company, an English firm organized to develop and manage trade between England and its New England colonies, Boston became an early center of American commerce and industry.
With its deep well-sheltered harbor, Boston was undisputed as the commercial hub of colonial New England. Opposition to British colonial rule was strong in Boston well before the American Revolution. Once the war began, the city was a major center of resistance. The incorrectly named Battle of Bunker Hill, which was actually fought on Breed's Hill in Boston's Charlestown neighborhood on June 17'h 1775, was one of the Revolutionary War's first major battles. Despite the heroic actions of many local patriots and George Washington's Continental Army, Boston remained under British military occupation until March 1776.
