Robert C. Jones has compiled the histories of all of the railroads that ever ran in Vermont, from the large Canadian Pacific, Central Vermont, and Rutland railroads to little-known roads such as Beldens Branch, Fair Ground, and the Bennington & Glastenbury. Everything is here, from the first meetings of Vermont's railroad pioneers (some called them dreamers) in the 1830s to the struggles of those striving to operate economically viable railroads in Vermont in the 1990s.

Volume I covers the Addison Railroad to the Hardwick & Woodbury Railroad in alphabetical order-twenty-seven railroads in all. Vermont railroad workers overcame many obstacles-including steep grades, heavy snows, spring floods, and a general lack of money-to keep their trains moving, and each chapter details their everyday routines as well as their tragedies, triumphs, and failures. From the time the trains ended Vermont's physical and economic isolation from major cities and ports in the mid-1800s until the one-two punch of the flood of 1927 and the Great Depression, Vermont's train stations and depots were the town centers of commerce and transportation. The rise and fall of the railroads led to the rise and fall of whole communities and has played a major role in shaping Vermont to this day.

Author Robert C.
