INTRODUCTORY REMARKS
This book is about four little California railroads that are no more. They once had the very good fortune to operate in the lower canyon of the El Rio de la Merced, the River of Mercy, just adjoining America's jewel, the Yosemite Valley.
Although separately owned, the name Yosemite appeared in the corporate titles of all four: the Yosemite Valley Railroad, common carrier; the Yosemite Lumber Co., and the Yosemite Sugar Pine Lumber Co., two logging lines that were for all practical purposes the same operation; and the Yosemite Portland Cement Co. with its little quarry railroad and incline.
These short lines epitomized all that was exciting about railroading out west ... the YV carried perhaps more famous passengers than any other small railroad through some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere, and contributed a great deal to the development of the National Park. The lumber companies operated geared engines through rugged country when logging was still a backbreaking task, and brought their timber out of the mountains down the steepest inclines ever built in the world.
The story is concerned with the men and machines that made up these railroads. They operated in the era between the stage coach and the automobile, between the kerosene lamp and the neon sign. It was an era that played a most important part in our history, and it can never come again.
But it is worth remembering.
