INDEX

RAILROADS OF THE HOUR is a completely streamlined hook about a streamlined industry which is operating right up to the hour. As its name implies, this book offers accurate descriptions of what has occurred in modern United States railroad practices in the last five years. Boasting 161 crack photographs all taken since 1954, it is strictly modern and shows what the railroads are constantly doing to save the public and the shippers money and how they have modernized themselves despite the harassments of government and state built and maintained highways, subsidized airlines and waterways.
Six new railroads not in Mr. Farrington's previous railroad hooks are treated fully: the Bangor & Aroostook; the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western; the Lehigh & Hudson; the St. Louis & Southwestern (Cotton Belt); the Chicago Great Western; and the Northern Pacific. Other roads covered are the Chesapeake & Ohio, the Santa Fe, the Southern, the Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific.
Both new freight and passenger trains, operating practices, new CTC installations, the latest in retarder yards, radio, piggy-back and specialized services, fast freight schedules provided by eleven modern Class 1 railroads are completely covered. There are chapters on Timken roller bearings, the new Union Switch & Signal Company's Velac for retarders in classification yards, the Budd Company and its great products, and the new Servo hotbox detectors.
The author takes up the most important part of a railroad's business-freight. But descriptions are also given of the new ultramodern passenger trains such as the Lackawanna's Phoebe Snow; the Northern Pacific's North Coast Limited; the Southern's Crescent and Royal Palm; the Santa Fe's San Francisco Chief, El Capitan, and Texas Chief; and the Union Pacific's City of Los Angeles with its new dome diners and lounge cars.
New Yards described are: the Chesapeake & Ohio's at Russell, Kentucky; the Santa Fe's Corwith at Chicago; the Northern Pacific's Pasco at Pasco, Washington; the Union Pacific's North Platte; the Southern Pacific's Houston and Roseville; and the Southern's Norris.
For the first time, the author has covered a great deal about the railroads' attracting new industry along their properties, and there is a complete chapter on the Trinity Industrial District in Dallas, Texas.
