DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
No single development has had as great an impact on north-central Colorado as the arrival of the "iron horse." As was true throughout the west, railroads were influential in the location and development of towns. Prior to the arrival of the railroads, north-central Colorado was essentially unpopulated, except for a few stage stations such as Latham, Namaqua and Virginia Dale. As the railroads grew, so too did the number of new settlements along the various routes. In short, railroads were responsible for the demographic history of north-central Colorado.
Railroads of Northern Colorado is the first in-depth study of rail development in this part of the State. The area defined as north-central is a sizeable one, consisting of over 9,000 square miles, extending from Longmont north to the Wyoming line, and from North Park, west of the Divide, east into the Pawnee National Grasslands and the Keota-New Raymer area.
Emphasis of the book is on the history and development of rail transportation. Each chapter is devoted to one of the major lines that penetrated the northern part of Colorado, including the Denver Pacific, Colorado Central, Greeley, Salt Lake & Pacific, Denver, Laramie & Northwestern, Great Western, Laramie, Hahns Peak & Pacific, and of course, the Union Pacific and Colorado & Southern.
Complimented by an outstanding collection of photographs, Railroads of Northern Colorado is a book that will appeal to anyone with an interest in railroads, transportation, and Colorado history.
