PREFACE
The Lehigh Valley Chapter, National Railway Historical Society, Incorporated, corn-plying with numerous requests from railway historians and railway "buffs", presents this revised issue of its 1956, or second, publication entitled RAILROADS IN THE LEHIGH RIVER VALLEY, Steam Operation, 1836-1953. However, the editorial staff has combined information from the first edition with important events which have occurred since 1953 and has virtually produced a new book. The new version has been identified as a revised edition with no specific references to steam locomotives. Corrections, deletions, additions, and adjustments to the original format and texts have been accomplished wherever necessary. Additional entries have enlarged the photograph sections, and available technical data have been listed underneath the captions of many locomotive photographs. Directions are identified according to railroad usage, where applicable, rather than exact geographical locations.
Concise individual texts trace significant historical events which happened between the years extending from 1826 until, and including, 1962 and, with few digressions, in those areas of Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Lehigh, Luzerne, Monroe, Montgomery, and Northampton counties of eastern Pennsylvania which are located in the Lehigh River valley or within a twenty-five mile radius from Allentown, the largest city on the river's banks. The editorial staff realizes that each railroad's comprehensive history would require much more space than herein provided.
Historical sketches of railroads, ten now operating and two defunct, are based on the systems as organized by 1910. Information for these renditions represents a blending of data and facts gleaned from the following sources: news columns of Evening Chronicle, Allentown Morning Call, and Sunday Call-Chronicle; feature articles of Newark Sunday News; Moody's Manual, Railroads; Poor's Manual, Railroads; Lehigh County Anniversary History by Roberts, Stoudt, Krick, and Dietrich; Engineering News; Railway Age; Josiah White, Prince of Pioneers by Eleanor Morton; Official Guide of Railways:, Railroad Magazine; The Story of The Old Company; Locomotives of The Jersey Central by Owen and Crater; A History of Catasauquo by Lambert; History of The Lehigh Valley by Henry; History of The North Pennsylvania Railroad by Joy V. Hare; Northampton And Bath Railroad Company; Centennial History of The Pennsylvania Railroad Company 1846-1946 by Burgess and Kennedy; A Century of Reading Company Motive Power; A History of Bethlehem by Levering; History of Nazareth, Pennsylvania by Schultz and' Ettinger; Coupler, CNJ employee's publication; Buried Black Treasure by Carl Corlsen; Baldwin Locomotives: Annual Report of The Auditor General of the State of Pennsylvania; Northampton, prepared by Bicentennial Committee and compiled by Ray Wahl; information supplied by public relations and operating departments of railroads discussed; and railroad toles told by innumerable railroad men.
Steam and diesel-electric locomotives depicted in the photographic section which follows each historical sketch are representative of types entered on the local terminals' rosters. Photographs of self-propelled curs have been included wherever appropriate. The number of pages devoted to each system represents volume and diversification of events, uniqueness of operation, variety of motive power, and availability of interesting photographs. Neither favoritism nor prejudice have influenced the manner of presentation.
Contributors of either information or photographs are listed alphabetically on the title page, and those who contributed photographs are credited once again underneath the photograph submitted. All contributions and gestures of encouragement are gratefully acknowledged by the editorial staff.
The various historical sketches and numerous fine photographs will better acquaint railway enthusiasts and historians with the railroads which are, or were, vital components of the Lehigh River valley's financial prosperity and which have contributed important events to the some area's rich magnificent history.
