RAILROADING 'HIE MODERN WAY is a streamlined hook about a streamlined industry, and the title gives the most accurate description of its contents. It boasts 143 photographs all taken since 1948, captioned with places. Divisions, locomotives, and direction of the train, There are also interior views of many of the new cars. New trains, operating practices, C.T.C., yards, and radio of fifteen modem Class-1 railroads are completely covered. Nine new railroads, not in any of Mr. Farrington's previous railroad books, are treated fully. They arc the Bessemer and Lake Erie, Chicago and Eastern Illinois, Frisco Lines. Kansas City Southern, Pittsburgh and West Virginia, Seaboard, Virginian, Wabash, and Western Pacific.
The author takes up the most important part of a railroad's business - freight. Descriptions are also given of new ultra-modern passenger trains such as the Wabash Bluebird. the Rio Grande and Western Pacific's California Zephyr, the Baltimore & Ohio's Columbian, Southern Pacific's Cascade. Shasta Daylights and Sunsets, Seaboard's Gulf Wind and Silver Comet, C. & E. L's Georgian, Frisco's Meteor, Milwaukee's Olympian Hiawatha, and others. New yards described arc the Santa Fe's Argentine at Kansas City, Southern Pacific's Taylor at Ins Angeles, the Frisco's Springfield, and Chicago and Eastern Wansford at Evansville, Indiana.
Major movements of ore, wheat, phosphate, coal, meat, and other perishables and the Florida citrus move arc discussed.
The Sperry rail detector car, emphasizing the railroads' great foresight and ingenuity in their never ending search for safety devices, is included, as well as a chapter on the electrified portion of the Virginian Railroad. Electro-Motive Diesel locomotives, for yard as well as road service, are taken care of in another chapter. C'T'C comes in for its share of recognition, 'lie last two chapters take up the unfair truck competition the railroads are receiving as well as automobile and truck hazards at highway crossings.
The book is a "must" for those of other countries, as well as the United States, who are interested in this great industry, for railroad fans, model enthusiasts, and railroad men. The author's books on American railroads are practically the only ones on present-day railroad operations and are more widely read by every type of railroader throughout the world than any others. These men praise them for their factual correctness, attention to detail, and handsome illustrations.
