INTRODUCTION
HOFFMAN is a bastion of time for the long leaf pine forests of Richmond County, North Carolina. It is one of the many towns developed, primarily along the Raleigh & Augusta Air Line Railroad for the wealth of its resources.
Hoffman today is dissected by the CSX Transportation track, with an unused pass track from the days when Hoffman would see as many as 20 trains daily (1980); and even more prior to that.
What began as virgin long leaf pine forests became a haven for an industry. After 20 years, the industry was gone, and with it the trees. Today, the land is also home for the Sandhills Game Lands Wildlife Reserve. The timber is once again growing and somewhat protected. But long ago the story was different.
This is the story of the HOFFMAN & TROY RAILROAD and each of the railroads of Hoffman, N.C. Let us walk back in time to see the story unfold....
