DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Rail traffic keeps rolling along the waterfront.
Railroading Along the Waterfront will take you on a photographic journey to key places where rails and water meet. You'll be treated to views of the compact terminal railroads in New York where the only connection to the outside is by carfloat. You'll see a sampling of the rail-served ports in the Canadian Maritimes and New England. Chapters on the Great Lakes and the West Coast will show you how prevalent bulk shipping is in today's economy. And, you'll get a glimpse of the relaxed pace of railroading and commerce along the continent's rivers and lakes where railroads first ferried across and then bridged the waters.
Waterfronts make perfect additions to your model railroad. Cargo is transferred between freight cars, pier terminals, warehouses and ships. Freight cars are shoved onto barges for a trip across the water to isolated switching districts in the brick and concrete canyons of large cities. Floats carry rail cars to remote island logging operations. Ore and coal are dumped from huge, specialized docks into the cargo hold of a bulk freighter. Huge elevators lining the shores gobble up entire unit trains of grain.
Railroading Along the Waterfront will give you tips on how to add the fascination of waterfront railroading to your layout. The photo-packed modeling chapter includes sections on easy ways to make water, the basics of carfloat operation, and the workings of Great Lakes ore docks, not to mention photos of waterfront industries and track layouts for pier districts. Add to these a listing of products that will bring your waterfront to life and you'll see that Railroading Along the Waterfront is a colorful and informative addition to your model railroad library.
