At the beginning of this century, the railroads were the greatest-and most romantic-industry in America, with a work force of almost two million, the largest in the nation. The railroaders of that era-especially the engineer riding high in the cab of his steam locomotive-were the aristocrats of the road, and the railroads worked as well as they did because of them. As Stuart Leuthner writes in his introduction to The Railroaders, "There was only one way to do the job, whether you were running an engine pulling the Super Chief or replacing a rail on a branch line. You did it the right way:'
Sadly, the steam locomotive and the remarkable way of life it represented are gone now, but the last memories of this Golden Age of railroading have been gloriously captured in 180 photographs and over thirty vivid first-person narratives from engineers, dispatchers, conductors, firemen, redcaps, stationmasters, Pullman car porters, and chefs-the men and women who ran the trains in their heyday.
Leuthner spent ten years searching out these remarkable people. Sifting through hundreds of leads and crisscrossing the country to find them-sometimes arriving too late-he managed to rescue on tape a part of American history that had almost disappeared without a trace. Visiting with these railroad men and women, Leuthner listened as they spoke of their pride in their work, their love for the old locomotives and the uniqueness of life with the railroads, and their sadness at the coming of the diesel.
